The “Welcome Gallery” is the first set of displays visitors see after entry. This “threshold experience” is vital in engaging the visitor and orientating them with the layout of galleries, but should not delay them too much. Motivation was commissioned to design the content for the whole area.
There is a mix of media for different visitor segments to engage with, a short video history projected on 2 synchronised screens, combining archive footage and stills with captioning and sound effects to create an exciting and informative introduction.
An interactive gesture wall displays a large version of the gallery lay-out printed in the guide book and leaflets. This allows visitors to decide where they wish to visit, what facilities are available around the museum, and so on.
A 3D graphics wall was created, which seamlessly incorporates this interactive area, and also provides further insight into the stories told in the museum. Adjacent to the exit from this space are dispensers with children’s trails and leaflet guides.
