The historic Church of St. John the Baptist sits at the heart of the village of Penshurst in Kent. It is adjacent to Penshurst Place, the Tudor Mansion and home to the Sydney family from 1552, and later given to Ann of Cleves as part of her divorce settlement from Henry VIII.
The Church has a rich history of its own and via a significant HLF grant, was able to carry out much needed refurbishments to allow visitors to spend some time exploring its history.
This history was developed into interpretative themes, which appear on graphics panels around the church and are expanded upon in a new guide book.
The graphics were designed to reflect some of the important architectural features of the church. QR codes on the panels also allow visitors to gain additional information allied to the website.
The website itself also has to operate as a source of information for the congregation – the church is still operational part-time, so diary and events pages were built into its function, sitting alongside the history and stories the church has to tell.
